Mobile phone transaction security

27 November, 2007

While reading The Age the other day, I wasn’t surprised to read about mobile commerce finally getting a boost! The Asher Moses article was interesting and you can certainly see the consumer benefits of just pulling out your mobile and paying for everyday items. However, the old security question pops up again and although not covered at length in the article, it got me thinking about just how comfortable Australian’s might be with the security of the platform.

Asher reported that the PayPal Galaxy Survey of 1100 Australian mobile phone users said 64 per cent wanted to purchase products via their mobile. This is great news for the mobile commerce industry, but then 72 per cent were concerned about the security of their personal information. It will be interesting to see how the security issue is handled.

Our own research at RaboPlus conducted with TNS shows nearly two thirds of consumers polled considered the online security policy of online banks before deciding whether to become customers.

Given the airing the whole online security issue has been getting from journalists and bloggers, I think it would be fair to say that consumers mainly worry about their personal details being stolen during online transactions. So how quickly will we all rush to buying and transacting over our mobile ….I am not sure! Will convenience win over security, or will Australia be slow to take off compared to other markets?

I checked out what consumer bloggers were thinking about purchasing products via their mobile, but couldn’t find much at all. I thought there would be a frenzy of web savvy people trying the platform out!

Success with this one, this is the only fellow blogger I found who had signed up!
