My Top List of the Do's and Don'ts of Online Banking

Submitted on 5/11/2007 17:50

There is a lot of myths around passwords particularly that passwords cannot be cracked.

Here are some Do's and Don'ts.

Some classic don'ts are

  • Don't use your favourite football team

  • Don't use your pet's name

  • Don't use ‘password' as a password?

  • Don't use the name Thomas

  • Don't use the term ‘security'

  • Don't use your middle name or other names

  • Don't use 123456 (it's the 5th most common)

  • Don't use ‘Letmein' or ‘trustno1'

If you have some classic 'don'ts', add to my list, we could have some fun here!

Some classic do's are

  • Use Alphanumeric passwords

  • Change passwords occasionally

  • Use more random passwords

  • Remember, every password can be cracked

If you have some more classic do's add to the list so we can all share them.

If you use internet banking at home on a wireless network, ensure you also protect it with a password. Your online banking access details should always be protected.

Store passwords securely, there are plenty of good software that is cheap (aka free). Try Keepass or Password Safe.
